Buying a rescue dog

Many people are put off of the idea of buying a rescue dog, as they are unsure of their temperament, behaviours and history, as well as not knowing how to deal with a problem when they emerge. Others who have already adopted such a pet may give the much-loved pet up begrudgingly, because the behaviour manifests itself, which they feel they just don’t know how to deal with. Often, such behaviours are easy to turn around, for the benefit of the new owners and the new dog, who is placed in a strange situation with strange, but kindly, people, without any knowledge of manners, how to behave etc. Rescue dogs can indeed be more of a handful than dogs that have been reared as puppies, undertaken obedience classes, and know from week 8 what is acceptable to their owners. Unfortunately, for many rescues, this is not the case; they are lacking in knowledge of how to behave within their new human pack, and often suffer further as a result. Buying a rescue can be extremely rewarding, and rescue dogs definitely appreciate any good fortune that comes their way, however, problems can occur. This section is for those thinking of buying a rescue dog, or those who already have one (no problems YET), or for those owning one, and experiencing one or more problems. Please state accordingly, perhaps noting individual problems.
