Certain breeds of dogs simply cannot resist lunging out at cars, bikes, vans and lorries whilst being walked along busy roads by their owners. Often, such road-side walks are necessary for many people, even if only to take their dog to a local park or the vets. Often a funny site for on-lookers, the behaviour is less than funny for those who have to walk the dog, often leading to injury, and with the possible risk of death, depending on the sheer strength of the dog and owner. An additional worry is that, if a dog does leave the hands of its owner, it may well bite the 'prey' i.e. the cyclist once it catches up with it. The chase is one of sheer delight to many dogs, especially that of the Herding variety e.g. Border collies. But, such behaviour can be re-directed with time and patience, and in knowing how to handle your pet in such situations. This is a behaviour that MUST be modified for the safety of owner and dog alike.
